What it's like to relocate to London as a lawyer

London is still one of the most popular moves for lawyers globally.

And for good reason.

It’s one of the few markets where you can work on genuinely complex, cross-border matters, across top-tier UK, US and international firms, all in one place.

But relocating to London isn’t just about the role.

It’s everything around it.

The Reality of the London Legal Market

London moves quickly. You’re not just stepping into a new job – you’re stepping into a market where:

Deals are larger
Timelines are tighter
Expectations are higher

That’s part of the appeal, but it’s also what catches people off guard.

It’s a strong move for lawyers who want to develop quickly, but it does come with pressure.

Housing in London

This is usually the biggest shock.

Rent isn’t cheap, especially if you want to live centrally or near your office.
Most lawyers relocating tend to:
start in areas like Clapham, Fulham, Islington or Balham or go slightly further out for better value (Walthamstow, Tooting, Stratford)

A one-bedroom flat in central areas can sit anywhere between £2,500–£3,200 per month.

A lot of people house share initially. It makes the move easier.

The Practical Side of Relocating to London

There are a few things you end up sorting almost immediately:

Banking
Opening a UK account is straightforward, but you’ll need:
Passport
UK address (even temporary)
UK mobile number

Bills
Utilities aren’t usually included in rent.
Expect around £100/month for basics like gas, electricity and water.

Council tax
Roughly £85–£165/month depending on the area.

Getting Around London

London’s public transport is one of the easiest parts of the move:

Tube
buses
trains

Everything is well connected, and you can just tap in with your phone or card.

Apps like Citymapper become your best friend very quickly.

Healthcare in the UK

The NHS covers most essentials once you’re set up through your visa.
A lot of professionals still choose private healthcare on top:

Faster access
More flexibility
Specialist appointments without long waits

Lifestyle in London

This is where London wins.

You’ve got:

Parks like Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath
Markets, restaurants, and food scenes everywhere
Easy travel across Europe
Constant events, from theatre to sport

It’s a city where people work hard, but there’s always something going on around it.

So… is it worth it?
For a lot of lawyers, yes:

The quality of work
The exposure you get
and how quickly you develop

Final thought

Most people don’t move to London because it’s comfortable.

They move because it challenges them.
And usually, that’s exactly what they were looking for.
